Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is an important place for summer breeders in China. Also the high elevation here has bestowed this place with some special endemic birds such as Tibetan Sandgrouse, and Pink-tailed Bunting. This birding trip covers two alpine provinces of China, Qinghai and Tibet. The average sea elevation is more than 3000 meters. Our focus will be local endemics on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau including various game birds, finches, sandgrouses and cranes. In terms of habitats, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is featured by alpine grasslands, meadows and desert.

The high elevation has made this land of world beauty different from tropical areas in the regard of bird varieties, only small group of bird species can survive in the highland. So this trip will highlight the real endemics instead of varieties such as Hume’s Ground Jay, Tibetan Rosefinch, Tibetan Snowcock, Black-necked Crane, Tibetan Lark. Though the birding on the high-elevation area and remote areas in Tibetan area is quite tough, we will be rewarded by the good view of some rare endemics you can only see them here beside the stunning landscapes, beautiful wild flowers, authentic Tibetan culture and different grazing wild animal flocks. In the alpine lakes, we will see the summer breeders such as Black-necked Crane, Ibisbills, Rudy Shelduck and Pallas’ Gull, Brown-headed Gull and Great Cormorant. We will start this trip from Xining, the capital city of Qinghai Province. After birding in some carefully-pick sites around Xining, we will take a train to Lhasa to look for some endemics such as Tibetan-eared Pheasants and Giant Barbarx.
Please note that the trip to Tibet is only an extension.
