Trip Introduction

This birding trip has been on the top list of many birders and birding companies in the world. Located in the southwest part of China, Sichuan Province has vast land territory with 485,000 square km in total, bordering Tibet in the west, Qinghai, Gansu and Shanxi in the north, Yunnan and Guizhou in the south and Chongqing in the east. Ranging from less than 500 meters in sea elevation on Chengdu Basin to 7514 meters on the top of Gongga Mountains, Sichuan has almost all kinds of landforms including low elevation plains, mountains, lakes, gorges, rivers, wetlands and plateau. They serve as habitats for birds of different species. The diversity of landforms, vast territory, unique location and varied climates has endowed the province with two thirds of China’s endemic birds, ranking first in China in the regard of endemic species. We made some change to the itinerary in 2013. The temperary closing down of Wawu for reconstruction has disappointed lots of birders. Hopefuly, Wawu will be open to public according to the schedual we have got. To maximize birds we can see, we have made Wawushan an option. In case it is still close or the habitats are not longer good as they were. We arrange a visit to Mt. Laojun in southeastern part of Sichuan to see some endemic birds there before we move western ward to eastern edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, searching birds living in different elevations and habitats.

This trip covers almost all kinds of habitats in Sichuan, we will visit some very popular birding sites such as Wawushan or Mt. Laojun, Balang Mountain, Wolong Nature Reserve, Mengbishan, Flower Lake, Baxi Village and Jiuzhaigou, just to name a few here. The closing down of Wawu Mountain has disappointed many birders.  Just in case we still can’t go there, we go to Laojunshan in Yibing instead, which has similar environment as Wawu, another star bird we have good chance to see there is Sichuan Partridge. By concentrating on China’s endemics, this 16-day birding trip is absolutely an ultimate chance for endemics in China. Though some part of this trip is quite strenuous due to climbing or walking in high-elevation areas, we will be rewarded by not only some rare endemics but also the beautiful sceneries and rich ethnic minority culture.
