Birding in Jinan City



Located in the north-western part of Shangdong Province, Jinan is one of the important birth places of Chinese civilization and has a history of more than 2,600 years. Now it serves as the capital of Shangdong Province in Eastern China and is the political, economic, and culture centre of the province. With a total population of 6.81million, Jinan is sitting in the transition zone between the foothills of the Tai Shan Massif to the south and the valley of the Yellow River to the north.
 
The highest place in this city has a sea elevation of 1,108 meters while the lowest only 5 meters. The numerous water springs in this city attract a large number of egrets here and the city bird of Jinan is Little Egret. In terms of weather, Jinan lies between a humid subtropical and humid subtropical with four distinctive seasons, namely dry spring, hot and rainy summer, dry and cold in winter.
 
Some Important Birding Sites in Jinan

Yellow River Forest Park and Queshan Mountain
Located in the north part of Jinan, the two places are only 1km away from each other. The forest park covers 100 hectares with over 300,000 trees. Queshan Mountain is the place where a very famous Chinese doctor Bianque was buried. There are different eco-environments including forest, fish ponds and farmlands. Here you have good chance to see Great-spotted Woodpecker, Oriental Turtle Dove, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Red-throated Pipit, Spot-billed Duck, Little Grebe and Little Egret.
 
Jinxiuchuan Reservoir
Located to the south of Jinan, Jinxiuchuan Reservoir is one of the water sources for Jinan. The reservoir is surrounded by hills with lush vegetation. On the bank of the reservoir, we have chances to see Chinese Pond Heron and Eurasian Curlew. In spring and winter, you may see Rudy Shelduck, Smew, Japanese Waxwing, and Crested Lark.
 
Quancheng Park
Located in the downtown Jinan, Quancheng Park covers 46.7 hectares and used to be the botanical garden of Jinan City. About 200,000 plants belonging to 450 families have been planted inside the park. So many birds choose here as their habitats. When we stroll in the park, we have chances to see Common Hoopoe, Red-billed Starling, and Yellow-browed Warbler.
